AFRICAN NGO INSTITUTE

African NGO Institute Profile

Our Corporate Identity

The African Institute for Non-Governmental Organisations (AFRINGO) is a regional NGO training and certification institution that was established to meet the ongoing needs of the African NGO workforce in the current dynamic operating environment. An integral research, training and capacity building arm of the  African Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (AFRONGO) and affiliated with several regional and international training institutions, AFRINGO builds the institutional capacity of NGOs to enable them to become more effective and capable organisations in pursuit of their missions. The Institute offers a wide range of professional short courses that are designed to continuously improve productivity in various national, regional and international organisations, private sector organisations and other various CSOs/NGOs across Africa.

AFRINGO Training Vision

To be Africa’s leading and reputable NGO training provider and a centre of reference in NGO capacity building, quality assurance, certification, and professional education and development services.

Our Mission

To develop and promote highest possible professional development standards, and provide quality tailor-made capacity building and consultancy services through managerial and skills training, certification, team building and research programmes and activities for all NGO leaders and personnel, at the regional, national and field levels.

Our Core Values

AFRINGO believes in:

  • Highest global standards
  • Top quality beneficiary orientation
  • Continuous human resource development
  • A learning culture
  • Professionalism
  • Responsiveness and flexibility
  • Co-operation and joint projects
  • Partnership and innovation

Training and Development Philosophy

AFRINGO’s training and development strategies and activities are guided and underpinned by the following guiding principles:

a) Stakeholder Primacy

AFRINGO exists primarily to serve the interests of its members and other stakeholders, who include:

  • NGOs
  • Staff/personnel
  • Suppliers
  • Partners
  • NGO Sector Regulators/Authorities
  • International Organisations
  • Other Government Agencies

b) Strategy Critical Activity

Training is a strategy-critical activity in the NGO sector where technical know-how and managerial expertise are changing and advancing very rapidly. Any organisation would lose its ability to provide goods and services effectively unless its personnel are kept updated and have cutting edge expertise. In this regard, AFRINGO will ensure that its strategies, programmes and delivery are aligned to the prevailing dynamic and challenging operating environment in order to achieve excellence in meeting the needs and expectations of its stakeholders.

c) Partnerships

AFRINGO will work with any organisation, groups or persons that enhance its capabilities and are relevant to the development and delivery of the best practices in training and credentialing.

In this regard, AFRINGO will:

  1. develop networks and co-operate with appropriate individuals, groups and organisations and
  2. promote co-operation and networking among and between member NGOs, partners and clients/beneficiaries.

d) Social Responsibility

In its quest to develop high quality training programmes, AFRINGO will strive to do so both qualitatively and quantitatively.

In this regard, AFRINGO will:

i) ensure that its training and credentialing programmes and activities are geographically spread as widely as possible to all regions of Africa

ii) endeavour to ensure that the training programmes are in French, Arabic, Portuguese, and English.

Human Resource Development

Adequately trained and skilled human resources are key to the success of any organisation. This is especially the case in the African NGO sector where the pace of change is mind-boggling. The critical expertise required to effectively run NGOs or manage projects and programmes is also changing rapidly.

With the current trends towards globalisation, regional integration, consolidation and liberalisation, the rapid technological changes especially in the electronic field and other challenges confronting NGOs of all sizes, the need to increase the skills and competencies of NGO personnel at all levels is self-evident.

Learning Approach

The training programmes are designed to be highly participative and challenging. Training methods include a mix of formal lectures, group discussions and in some cases, carefully selected videos and case studies. The number of participants is limited to allow maximum individual attention and participation.

Training Instructors/Facilitators

The instructors/facilitators for the various courses are of world class standards. They have wide and extensive experience and proficiency in the relevant fields. To provide as much local value added material as possible, reliance will be made largely on experts from within the region/continent where the training is being conducted rather than relying on first-world models.

As far as possible, we ultilise experienced, competent and capable resource persons from member NGOs and service provides so that we benefit from their expert knowledge of the African NGO community. This helps develop cooperation among member NGOs, facilitate the marketing of each other’s facilities and optimise the use of highly qualified and competent national and international NGO personnel.
